Dr. Elsie Seelye Pratt (August 31, 1873 - October 3, 1963) was a distinguished physician, educator, and advocate for public health and vocational education.
Born on August 31, 1873, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of Lemuel C. Pratt and Melancia Bowker Wright Pratt. She attended Smith College, graduating in the Class of 1895 alongside classmates who would become part of a prominent network of early women in medicine. Following her undergraduate studies, Pratt pursued medical training and built a dedicated career serving public health initiatives and supporting women in higher education.
In her early career, Pratt worked as a physician to women at the University of Michigan and served in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She actively participated in civic and medical events, including delivering lectures on vocational schools under the direction of the Academy of Medicine's public health education committee, and was recognized among outstanding alumnae and women in human service connected to the University of Michigan. Later, she established a practice in Denver, Colorado.
Pratt's personal life was spent within a community of unmarried professional women in Denver. She was the long-time companion and romantic partner of physician, author, and explorer Dr. Margaret Long. The two women shared a deep personal and professional connection as part of a local network of "bachelor women" physicians. Following Dr. Long’s passing in 1957, Pratt was named a primary beneficiary in Long’s estate, receiving her Denver home at 2070 Colorado Boulevard along with a significant portion of her estate. Between 1959 and 1960, Pratt also helped preserve Long's historical legacy by co-donating the Margaret Long Papers to the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College.
Dr. Elsie Seelye Pratt passed away on October 3, 1963, in Denver, Colorado, at the age of 90, and was buried in Mountain Home Cemetery in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
